Senior Labor & Employment Counsel

My client, a reputable public transit authority company, is growing their legal team! Servicing 400+ square miles across Ohio, my client also serves approximately 200,000 customers on a typical weekday, or about 50 million rides annually, through a variety of modes (Bus, BRT, Paratransit, Light and Heavy Rail). The company is also the 2019 recipient of the prestigious American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Gold Award for Bus Safety & Security Excellence.

The Senior Labor & Employment Counsel will be reporting directly into the Deputy General Counsel and have responsibilities for all things labor & employment!

Responsibilities:

  • Representing the Authority's interests in labor arbitrations and before state and federal administrative agencies, with occasional litigation work in court.
  • Providing legal assistance to Human Resources and various departments on labor and employment matters.
  • Offering legal support, advice, and counsel to various departments within the Authority and to the Board of Trustees.
  • Drafting and reviewing Board resolutions.
  • Handling public records requests and subpoenas.
  • Serving as a resource and providing legal assistance to the Authority's Office of Equal Opportunity.
  • Conducting legal research and preparing legal opinions on public sector legal issues, including public transit and statutory compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Conferring with state and federal agencies for guidance and monitoring legislation affecting the Company.
  • Performing other similar duties as required.
  • Ensuring all legal matters are handled thoroughly, efficiently, and promptly, with written work products of the highest quality.
  • May be assigned to serve on Authority committees and review panels.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and a license to practice law in the State of Ohio and be in good standing with the Ohio Supreme Court.
  • minimum of eight (8) years of relevant legal experience is required. At least three (3) years professional supervisory experience preferred, either through professional work environment or through completion of supervisory training/education.
