An electric utility company that serves a substantial customer base across the Midwest is seeking an Associate General Counsel to join the team. This role involves representing the company before state and federal regulatory commissions, ensuring compliance with complex regulatory frameworks, and advising on a wide range of legal issues related to utility rates, tariff issues, operations and energy policy.
Responsibilities:
- Provide expert legal advice on regulatory and business issues, including the interpretation of laws, regulations, and policies impacting the company.
- Negotiate, draft, and review sophisticated customer-related agreements, contracts, and other legal documents to ensure alignment with business decisions and adherence to legal standards.
- Represent the company before state and federal regulatory commissions, including the preparation and presentation of complex cases, management of regulatory filings, and ensuring rigorous compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Identify and assess legal risks, develop strategic mitigation plans, and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Conduct in-depth legal research, analyze regulatory developments, and provide strategic insights to support business decisions and long-term planning.
- Collaborate with the General Counsel, executive leadership, and other departments to align legal strategies with business objectives.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor degree and licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state.
- Minimum of 5 years of legal experience in State and Federal regulatory electric utility matters and practice before a state public service commission
- Deep knowledge of regulatory frameworks, utility rates, tariff issues and operations.
- Proven understanding of the utility rate making process, including negotiation tactics, approval processes, and presentations from inception through approval.
- Familiarity with integrated resource planning (IRP).
- Broad and nuanced understanding of the energy industry, including utility operations, stakeholder processes, and the wider political and regulatory environment.
- Exceptional leadership, negotiation, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Superior research, technical writing, and verbal communication skills.
