Role Overview:
The ideal candidate will have a robust background in compliance, litigation, and real estate law, with a proven ability to manage legal risks in a fast-paced, growing real estate environment. As Associate General Counsel, you will provide critical legal guidance on compliance matters and litigation management, ensuring the company meets regulatory obligations and mitigates potential legal risks in all aspects of its operations. You will work closely with internal teams to ensure proactive legal risk management across all levels of the business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and manage compliance with local, state, and federal real estate regulations, including zoning, land use, environmental laws, and property development requirements.
- Handle a broad range of real estate-related litigation, including landlord-tenant disputes, property claims, construction-related disputes, and contractual issues.
- Advise senior leadership and other departments on legal risks and compliance strategies, ensuring the company's operations align with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
- Manage the company's real estate litigation portfolio, from pre-litigation strategy to settlement or trial, coordinating with external counsel when necessary.
- Draft, review, and negotiate real estate contracts, including purchase agreements, lease agreements, development contracts, and construction agreements, with a focus on risk mitigation and compliance.
- Stay current on emerging legal trends, regulations, and best practices affecting the real estate industry, and provide strategic advice to mitigate potential legal and regulatory risks.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, finance, and development, to ensure compliance in all aspects of the business.
- Develop and maintain internal compliance programs and training to ensure that employees understand legal and regulatory requirements in real estate transactions and operations.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in a corporate legal role, with a strong emphasis on real estate litigation and regulatory compliance.
- Deep knowledge of real estate law, including zoning, land use, environmental compliance, leasing, and property development.
- Proven experience in managing litigation matters related to real estate, including disputes with contractors, tenants, and other stakeholders.
- Strong background in managing compliance programs and advising on regulatory matters affecting real estate transactions and operations.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly present legal issues and provide practical, business-oriented advice to senior leadership and internal teams.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams to address compliance and legal issues, with a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
- A comprehensive understanding of real estate laws and regulations at local, state, and federal levels.
