An Independent Power Producer is looking for an experienced Real Estate Attorney to support its expanding U.S. project portfolio, with a focus on Chicago, IL, the Bay Area (CA), and Austin, TX. This role will be critical in managing real estate matters for renewable energy projects, from acquisition and development to financing and lease agreements. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of real estate law as it pertains to large-scale renewable energy infrastructure and have the ability to navigate complex legal challenges in a rapidly evolving industry.
Responsibilities:
- Draft, negotiate, and review sophisticated legal documents, including purchase agreements, land leases, title documents, and other contracts to protect and advance the organization's interests.
- Lead and manage high-value real estate transactions, including acquisitions, easements, land leases, and rights-of-way necessary for renewable energy project development.
- Identify, evaluate, and mitigate legal risks related to real estate holdings and transactions, advising senior leadership on strategies to minimize exposure and ensure compliance.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional project teams, offering legal expertise throughout all phases of renewable energy project development, from site selection and acquisition to construction and operational deployment.
- Provide legal oversight and support for M&A and financing transactions, with an emphasis on conducting thorough due diligence, title reviews, and the integration of real estate considerations.
- Manage or supervise complex litigation related to real estate disputes, including title issues, land rights conflicts, and other property-related matters, ensuring efficient resolution and minimal business disruption.
Qualifications:
- Located in or open to relocation to Austin, TX, Chicago, IL, or the Bay Area of California.
- A minimum of 5 years of legal experience, specializing in real estate law with a particular focus on renewable energy or large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Exceptional negotiation, drafting, and analytical skills, with a keen ability to navigate complex legal frameworks and diverse stakeholder interests.
- Proven track record of successfully managing complex real estate transactions, particularly in relation to energy projects, including land acquisition, leasing, and title review.
- Willingness to travel as necessary to support project activities and site assessments.
- Strong background in project finance, particularly as it pertains to the real estate components of energy projects.
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
- A demonstrated ability to operate both independently and collaboratively in a high-performing, fast-paced environment.
- In-depth knowledge of renewable energy technologies and their implications for real estate law, land use, and zoning.
- Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present legal concepts clearly to non-legal stakeholders.
