Job Title: Underwriting Counsel - Energy Division

Reports to: Head of Operations
Salary: $200,000-$250,000/yr
Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Underwriting Counsel to join our client's dynamic Energy Division at a leading provider of title insurance services. In this role, you will provide legal counsel and support to underwriters, clients, and stakeholders involved in energy transactions, including but not limited to oil, gas, renewables, pipelines, and other energy-related real estate projects.
You will utilize your expertise in real estate, energy law, and title insurance to analyze, evaluate, and mitigate risks related to energy transactions. The ideal candidate will have experience in both title underwriting and energy law, with a strong ability to assess complex legal and business issues in a fast-paced, client-focused environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legal Support for Energy Transactions:
- Provide comprehensive legal counsel to underwriters and clients on energy-related title matters.
- Review, interpret, and analyze energy-related property documents, including oil and gas leases, easements, deeds, rights-of-way, and other agreements affecting title.
- Advise on title issues, including resolving title defects, curative measures, and identifying potential risks in energy transactions.
- Risk Assessment & Underwriting:
- Evaluate the insurability of energy-related properties and transactions, ensuring compliance with internal underwriting guidelines and industry best practices.
- Assist in the drafting and issuance of title insurance policies for energy projects, including those involving complex land titles and energy infrastructure.
- Work with underwriters to develop strategies for mitigating title risks in complex energy transactions.
- Energy Industry Expertise:
- Stay current with trends and legal developments in the energy sector, including regulatory changes, environmental considerations, and emerging energy technologies (e.g., renewables).
- Provide legal insights on energy law matters affecting title, land use, and property rights in the context of energy exploration, production, transmission, and development.
- Client Relations & Transaction Support:
- Act as a key point of contact for clients, attorneys, and other stakeholders in energy-related title matters, providing expert advice on legal and underwriting issues.
- Collaborate with internal teams, including underwriters, claims, and risk management, to ensure seamless support for energy transactions and resolve complex issues.
- Education & Training:
- Provide guidance and training to internal teams on energy-related title issues, including legal trends, best practices, and complex case studies.
- Conduct educational seminars or webinars for clients and industry professionals, focusing on title insurance issues in energy transactions.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience practicing law with a focus on energy transactions, title insurance, or real estate law.
- Specific experience in title underwriting or title examination related to energy projects (e.g., oil & gas, renewables, pipelines) is highly preferred.
- Experience with energy law, land use, regulatory compliance, and environmental considerations in energy projects is a strong advantage.

- Strong knowledge of title insurance principles, underwriting guidelines, and legal issues related to energy transactions.
- Excellent analytical, legal research, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly and concisely to clients and internal teams.
